SNRE internal Pre-Nomination deadline = 9/25/13

SNRE deadline for nomination materials = 10/3/13

Rackham deadline = 11/13/13

PRE-nomination phase: Faculty should let Erin Lane know by Wednesday, 25 September, if they intend to nominate a student.

Materials needed by 3 October for the PRE-nomination phase:

  • Faculty nominator submits (limit 1 page) to eeallen@umich.edu via e-mail, a nomination statement including: 1) Specify graduation date, 2) Describe uniqueness of the student’s research; 3) Describe how the research will contribute to the field of study; and 4) Describe nominee’s overall academic accomplishments
  • Student provides CV, eeallen@umich.edu via e-mail
  • Student provides dissertation abstract, eeallen@umich.edu via e-mail
  • Erin Lane provides UM transcript

Each school may only nominate one (1) student; two if we can argue persuasively that the dissertations are distinctly different in intellectual content. In the event that more than one student is identified, Don Zak will make a final decision in consultation with the Scholarship Committee. The selected nominator(s) and student(s) will then be instructed on how to proceed with a full nomination.

FYI--The Rackham nomination process is via an on-line submission process.

The Rackham deadline for nominations for the 2013 ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards is Wednesday, 13 November 2013. These awards are designed to recognize exceptional and unusually interesting work produced by doctoral students in the last phase of their graduate work. The nominees’ overall academic accomplishments will also be taken into account.

ELIGIBILITY: Nominees must have completed the dissertation and have been awarded or will be awarded the doctoral degree during the 2013 CALENDAR year (January-December). Students enrolled in dual degree programs who have completed the dissertation but who have not yet met all the degree requirements for the second degree are also eligible.

REVIEW PROCESS

Members of the Michigan Society of Fellows, in collaboration with the Rackham Associate Deans and additional faculty reviewers, will make the final selections. Up to eight (8) nominees will be selected to receive the award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium. The reviewers also have the option of assigning Honorable Mention.

Finalists will be required to submit a hardcopy of their dissertations to their nominating department so they can be forwarded on to Rackham. The dissertation will be returned once the final selections have been made.
