SNRE internal deadline = 11/1/2013

SNRE may nominate one student. Once the student has been selected, SNRE's internal deadline to receive all application materials will be 12/19/2013.

Rackham Deadline = 1/16/2014

Nominees must be citizens of countries in the area formerly known as the Orient (extending from Turkey in the west to Japan and the Philippines in the east); not be married to a US citizen or permanent resident; must intend to devote themselves to a professional career in their native country after graduation; must be enrolled full-time; must have completed two full terms of graduate work by May 2014; must be in residence on campus as a full-time student during the tenure of the award.

Pre-nomination materials, submitted via e-mail attachment, to dianaw@umich.edu, are due no later than 1 November 2013:

1. Faculty provides a 2-3 paragraph statement via e-mail attachment. NOT needed at this time is the draft text for the Associate Dean’s cover letter.

2. The student provides a personal statement (1,500 word maximum), describing her research, future goals, and contributions to her home country. You should also specifically address 1) key issues in your field, 2) the anticipated impact of your project on the field, 3) how you propose to use your new skills in the service of your country, and 4) your professional goals in terms of the type of work and organization you hope to be employed in 10 years after completing the degree. 5) If you have a promise of a job in your field upon your return home, include the name of that organization.

3. The student provides her current CV.

4. NOT needed at this time are the two recommendation letters.

5. Diana W will provide the transcripts.

Rackham selection criteria: Demonstration of potential for contribution to the applicant's home country as well as academic record, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and timely progress to the degree.

Approximately 5-8 awards will be made for 2014-15. Awards consist of 100% tuition and required fees, a stipend (currently $18,600) and GradCare/Dental Option 1 for one academic year.

SNRE may only forward one student; decisions are made by the Scholarship Committee.
