Fellowship opportunity for international PhD students--who are currently in either their 2nd or 3rd year in the PhD program. Eligible fields include life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science and psychology. A student does not need to be working with an HHMI Investigator to be eligible.
SNRE may forward up to 3 students to Rackham for consideration in the University-wide process. The University, as a whole, may then forward 10 nominations to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) for consideration.
SNRE's internal timeline:
Pre-nomination deadline: 16 Oct (send documents electronically to dianaw@umich.edu)
Materials needed:
- STUDENT: one-page statement describing his/her research, future goals, and timetable for completion
- STUDENT: current CV
- FACULTY: letter (2 pages max) affirming that the nominee will do the dissertation in the advisor's laboratory and confirming the graduate program's intent to contribute 50% of the shortfall between the HHMI educational allowance and actual costs of tuition and benefits (the other 50% of the shortfall will be covered by Rackham).
- are studying in the life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science or psychology;
- have demonstrated exceptional talent for research;
- are in the second (or third) year of doctoral study;
- have entered a laboratory in which they will conduct their dissertation research, and
- are not U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents of the U.S.
