Restoration ecology is a relatively new discipline that integrates principles from ecology, engineering, economics, and select social sciences to repair ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. The chief goal is to restore the structure of biological communities and the ecological functions and ecosystems services they provide in systems that have been compromised ” usually by some form of human activity. This course will cover advanced topics in ecological restoration for potential practitioners. Using a combining of lectures, readings, field trips, and project work, we will cover the conceptual and theoretical foundations that underlie restoration attempts, and then link these to the real”world application of ecological principles to past and ongoing restoration projects.
