Alumni roadtrip examines U.S. climate adaptation

SNRE alumni Kirsten Howard and Allie Goldstein (pictured above, left to right) are setting out on a summer adventure: The Great American Adaptation Road Trip. The two just graduated May 4 with master of science degrees and now are traveling around the United States for three months. Their goal is to uncover stories about the physical and social technologies that small towns and cities are adopting in response to the felt or anticipated impacts of climate change. Their stories, photos and videos will be posted on their blog at www.adaptationstories.com.

The goals of their project are to showcase these adaptation stories while encouraging the SNRE community and others to follow their adventures.

  • Watch a 3-minute video about their project
  • Follow them on their blog at www.adaptationstories.com
  • Follow them on Twitter @kirstenandallie.

As they visit towns and cities, they will be speaking with natural resource managers, city planners, farmers, fishermen, teachers, researchers, homeowners, and insurance agents, for example. They welcome the help of the SNRE community in finding stories and contacts. If you have a story idea or a contact, email adaptationstories@gmail.com.

They have raised most of the funds to complete the trip, but still need need about $4,000 to take it all the way. They have set up a contribution website through Indiegogo. Donors receive a thank-you postcard, photo, or T-shirt from the trip. A $10 donation gets the donor a postcard from a mystery location, according to Kirsten and Allie.
