Katlian Valley Management Plan (2015)
A final report outlining the management plan, an outreach plan for garnering support and pursuing The goal of this project is to provide the Sitka Conservation Society (SCS) with a land management plan for the Katlian (Tlʼayáak Héen) Valley. The Katlian Valley is located north of the city of Sitka, Alaska. It is an important area to Sitkans and holds cultural significance for the local Tlingit tribe. Despite its importance as a key watershed, it has a history of timber harvesting (clear cut) that has impacted the valley’s resources. SCS is concerned with the preservation and future of this resource and would like a robust management plan prepared to assist the local Tribe, USFS, City of Sitka and other stakeholders with land management decisions going forward.
In addition to the management plan, the student team will develop an education and outreach program to educate the community and use for leveraging funds. Students will be asked to develop this plan by synthesizing existing research, reports, reviewing historical documents and other plans implemented in the region. Ideally the student team will: (a.) summarize case studies of other management plans with similar or recommended practices for Katlian Valley, (b.) analyze current documents pertaining to management of the valley and identify strengths and weaknesses, (c.) synthesize a management plan applicable to multiple agencies and stakeholders, (d.) provide recommendations for implementation to include an outreach plan for garnering support.
This project provides the opportunity for students to explore a larger, systems thinking approach to problem-solving, which will serve them well in future endeavors. The unique location makes it an important project regionally and nationally. In light of the multiple stakeholders involved (US Forest Service, Sitka Tribe, City and Borough of Sitka, etc.) there will be multiple opportunities to present the project at various conferences and meetings. Through these connections students may develop contacts for career development and networking.
