Summary of Project Idea: 

Hayes Township is seeking a recreational park development conceptual design; which includes the study and incorporation of local and regional social, governmental and economic demand factors.

This park development plan will include:

  • Comprehensive site and regional inventory of physical and cultural elements.
  • Analysis of site, region and recreation program elements.
  • Process and rationale of planning and design recommendations.
  • Inclusion of specified required elements, such as a boat launch to DNR specifications
  • Assistance in identifying potential development grants for financial aid.
  • Results of consultation and interface with supporting and/or funding organizations such as, the Little Traverse Conservancy, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, Audubon Society, MNRTF, DNR, regional recreation planners or authorities, regional assessment of public and semipublic lands.

We are exploring avenues for funds to help with travel, lodging and publishing costs.

Identify expected products/deliverables: 

Hayes Township will consider multiple student approaches, which could emanate from various fields of study to support the creation of a master park plan report. By way of examples, the final conceptual plan may reflect and incorporate such types of research and analysis as:

  • Inventory, analysis and synthesis of natural and cultural data
  • Resource supply and demand based conceptual planning study
  • Policy analysis and feasibility study of a potential regional parks authority;
  • A study of ecotourism and the relationship between natural resource management and the economy in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.
  • A study of the economics and benefits of land set aside for public use versus lost tax dollars.
