Jonathan Bulkley is the Peter M. Wege Professor of Sustainable Systems, and he holds a joint appointment with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering.

Teaching efforts are concentrated in water policy, risk-benefit analysis, and case studies in natural resources. Research concentrates on the development and application of both quantitative and qualitative means to help policy makers and decision makers attain improved planning, evaluation, and management of natural resources, especially water resources. Recently, research interests have expanded to include curriculum development for effective teaching of sustainale systems concepts to a wide range of disciplines. In addition, preliminary concepts are being explored that would result in a small team of graduate students having a water resources field experience in a third world area as part of their graduate studies.

Awards and Grants:
Dr. Jonathan W. Bulkley, James C. Bean, Gregory A. Keoleian, and Marc H. Ross were awarded an additional $149,127 by the National Science Foundation for further research on The "Life Cycle Optimization of Vehicle Replacement". With this amendment, the total award is $444,137 and will expire April 30, 2003. In May 2006, Professor Bulkley received the Service to the Profession Award from the Planning and Management Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  In June 2009, he received a grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to benchmark state wet weather regulatory policies throughout the country.

Research Interests:

Specific research interests include multi-objective analysis and risk analysis application.

Current/Recent Research:
Serve as CO-Director, the Center for Sustainable Systems located in the School of Natural Resources and Environment. The mission of the Center is to develop life cycle based models and sustainability metrics to evaluate the performance and to guide the continuous improvement of systems for meeting societal needs. The center promotes sustainability by providing these tools and knowledge so that diverse stakeholders may make better informed decisions. Selected as an AT&T Industrial Ecology Fellow with research support from the AT&T Foundation (1993-95). Multi-objective planning techniques and risk reduction concepts serve as the basic orientation for my research efforts. Served as a member of the Michigan Environmental Science Board (1992-95). Serve as a Monitor for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan for three water pollution cases. Serve on the International Upper Great Lakes Study of the International Joint Commission (February 2007-) Served as a Member, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Environmental Advisory Board, Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army (1995-1999).

Teaching Interests:
My teacjhing is concentrated in two cross-listed courses. Risk Benefit Analysis (CEE 589/NRE 595) is a fall term class; Water Policy (NRE %*/CEE 587) is a winter term class.  As I have been in a  phased retirement and will fully retire from the University in June, 2011, I shall only teach a Water Seminar, NRE 677, in the Winter term 2011.
