Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships
- African American
- Enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree program majoring in a life or physical science, or engineering. M.D./Ph.D. degree candidates are eligible
- Engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing dissertation research, having successfully completed all qualifying exams by September.
- A citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
The UNCF•Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships are intended to support African American graduate students as they complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for the doctoral degree in the biomedically relevant life or physical sciences and engineering.

* 5 Applicants may be forwarded to the UNCF-Merck from U of M. Applications must be submitted to Rackham before UNCF-Merck's deadline. The institution cover sheet asks for signatures of the Award Administrator and the President, Dean or Division Head. These signature will be obtained by Rackham once the final five applicants are selected.

* A double-spaced, typed two-page abstract of the applicant's doctoral research proposal
* A double-spaced, typed two-page description of the applicant's career goals
* Applicant's curriculum vitae including a list of publications if applicable
* Up to two reprints of published papers and/or up to two published abstracts, if applicable
* Official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. Generally, official transcripts may be obtained by requesting that they be sent directly to a responsible official at your institution.
* Three letters of recommendation: one from the applicant's graduate research dissertation advisor and two from other faculty members. Each letter should not exceed two double-spaced, typed pages. The letters should address the applicant's creativity, research skills, and ability to interact in a cross-disciplinary research laboratory environment. The letter for the graduate research dissertation advisor should also describe the stage of the applicant's doctoral research work and the expected date of receiving the doctoral degree.
Also include a diskette with files of your career goals, research proposal and vitae. Files should be in Word or .txt format for either the Windows or Mac operating system. Please label diskette with your name, institution, date, filenames, and operating system.
As the awards are intended to be used to support graduate student stipends and research, no part of the awards may be used for indirect costs. Awards begin no earlier than September.
The Fellowship Stipend of up to $43,500 is intended to cover a minimum of 12 months up to a maximum of 24 months of fellowship tenure.

Each award is up to a maximum of $53,500 and consists of a Fellowship Stipend of up to $43,500 for the award recipient and a Research Grant of up to $10,000. For administrative purposes, the awards will be made to the institution with which each award recipient is affiliated.
