Dissertation Fieldwork Grants
- Applicants must be currently enrolled for a doctoral degree.
- Application must be made jointly with a dissertation supervisor or other scholar who will undertake responsibility for supervising the project.
- Qualified doctoral students are eligible without regard to nationality or institutional or departmental affiliation.
- Grant funds cannot be released unless the applicant has successfully completed all requirements for the doctoral degree other than the dissertation/thesis. Applications may be submitted before the completion of such requirements; however, all requirements other than the dissertation/thesis must be completed before the start date for the research given by the applicant on the application form. If the application is successful, the Foundation will request confirmation that this requirement has been met.
- Dissertation Fieldwork applications that were unsuccessful in a prior funding cycle may be resubmitted only if they are accompanied by a resubmission statement, explaining how the application is different from the prior application and how the referees' comments have been addressed.
- If a Dissertation Fieldwork grant is awarded, the applicant and supervisor must agree to comply with the Requirements and Conditions of the Dissertation Fieldwork Grant.
Dissertation Fieldwork Grants are awarded to aid doctoral or thesis research. The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. The Foundation supports research that demonstrates a clear link to anthropological theory and debates, and promises to make a solid contribution to advancing these ideas.
The application asks for the following categories of information:
- General information about yourself, your supervisor, and the project
- An Abstract of your proposed research. If your application is successful, this abstract will appear on the Foundation's website. Please make sure your abstract is written in a style that is clearly understandable to a non-specialist.
- Project description questions. All applicants must answer the first five project description questions. Applicants who wish to be considered for the Osmundsen Initiative must also answer the sixth question. All responses should be carefully prepared. Applicants are advised to read the questions and instructions as they develop their answers.
- A resubmission statement if the current application is a resubmission of a previously declined application.
- A detailed budget
- A bibliography relevant to your proposed project
- A curriculum vitae for the applicant and supervisor
Do not send any other material, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, computer disks, manuscripts, publications, photographs, or recordings to the Foundation in support of your application. This material will not be used in the review process and cannot be returned.
* cover research expenses directly related and essential to the project (e.g. travel, living expenses during fieldwork, equipment, supplies, research assistance, and other relevant expenditures).
Tuition expenses or support for writing-up and analysis of results after your research is completed are ineligible.
Dissertation Fieldwork Grants provide a maximum of US $20,000 and the Osmundsen Initiative supplement provides up to an additional $5,000 for a maximum grant of US $25,000. Grants are non-renewable.
