Summer Graduate Research Fellowships
Graduate students intending academic or research careers who are conducting research in areas germane to the classical liberal tradition are encouraged to apply. Students should be at a stage of their work where they are prepared to focus on a discrete writing project during the Fellowship.
This program is designed for Law or PhD students who are working on a scholarly article or chapter of their dissertation.
The Summer Graduate Research Fellowship is a non-residential research and writing program sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies. It is open to advanced graduate students (doctoral or law), intending academic or research careers who are conducting research germane to the classical liberal intellectual tradition. The Fellowship provides an opportunity to work on a thesis chapter or a paper of publishable quality and to participate in interdisciplinary seminars under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.
The fellowship begins in June with a short conference at the Institute for Humane Studies in Arlington, Virginia, where Fellows have a chance to present the context of their work to other graduate students. After the first conference, Fellows will return to their home universities for the rest of the summer to continue independent research and writing on their own projects. In August, Summer Fellows return to IHS to participate in another conference, to present the results of their work over the summer, and to discuss issues of importance to young academics.
Students must submit an application through the online application system. This will require a short registration process and allows online document uploads of all supporting materials. If you do not have electronic versions of the required documents, you may also mail the following supporting materials to IHS:
*A current curriculum vitae or resume.
*A proposal of 500-1,000 words outlining the paper to be completed. *The proposed topic should be sufficiently manageable to result in a paper of publishable quality during the program. The paper may be a chapter of a doctoral thesis.
*A detailed bibliography.
*A short writing sample (approx. 8-15 pages), preferably on the chosen subject.
*A copy of GRE or LSAT scores and graduate transcripts.
*The name, address, phone number, and e-mail of a two faculty references.
See http://www.theihs.org/pdf/materials/128.pdf.
It is expected that you will not otherwise work, travel, or teach during this Fellowship.
Fellows will meet twice during the summer in conferences, once in June and again in August.
