Applicant Eligibility Comments: 

Full-time doctoral students who are registered at a recognized university, who are members of IAGLR, who have not previously received the award and whose proposed research topic is relevant to large lakes are eligible. Students who will graduate during the calendar year of the award are not eligible.

Funding Abstract: 

The IAGLR Scholarship is awarded annually to promising Ph.D. students who are IAGLR members and whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of large lakes. Funded by IAGLR, the scholarships are intended to promote academic excellence by encouraging young scientists to undertake graduate research in Great Lakes ecosystem health and to enter the field of Great Lakes science.

Funding Comments: 

Students will recover the cost of IAGLR membership as reduced registration fees if they attend the annual meeting.

In addition, the scholarship winners will receive a one-year membership in IAGLR, including a subscription to the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The winner(s) will receive the award(s) at the banquet for the annual meeting.

Application Process and Required Materials: 

Application Elements: A complete application is composed of the following:

  1. A Letter of Application (maximum one page) indicating the following:
    • name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of applicant;
    • degree sought and estimated year intending to graduate;
    • number of months enrolled in current program;
    • department and/or school;
    • name of major professor.
  2. A supervising professor's Letter of Endorsement.
  3. A brief title and extended abstract of proposed research including statement of why their research will make a significant contribution to understanding large lakes (no more than 2 single-spaced pages).
  4. Transcript(s) indicating the student's recent academic performance over past 2 years.
  5. A resume or CV of the applicant.
