What to do and when - SNRE Career Timeline

Plan for a 2 year MS student

(If you are a dual degree student or MLA student, you can use this timeline as well. During your 1st and 2nd year of study, refer to the 1st year of this timeline. During your 3rd year of study, refer to the 2nd year of this timeline.)

  • Please note that this is a suggested career timeline.
  • Each student is different and should use this document as a guide.

1st Year - 1st Semester

September

  • Set up your eRecruiterAccount
    • Watch our eRecruiter Video Tutorial to get started
    • Fill out your profile, academic information, and privacy tabs
    • Post your resume
    • Set up job/internship search agents
      • It's vitally important to set up your eRecruiter account right away
      • SNRE Career Services Staff and employers often do targeted searches for our students based on student resumes and your profile settings
      • Delaying eRecruiter setup may cause you to miss out on internship, job, and workshop opportunities
  • Need help drafting your resume for eRecruiter?

    • View sample student resumes - go to the eRecruiter Document Library for this resource
    • Other resume resources available on the SNRE Career Services Website
    • Make an appointment with SNRE Career Services Staff for a resume review
  • Join the SNRE LinkedIn Group
    • LinkedIn is an online networking tool that helps you expand your professional network by gaining access to the professional contacts of your friends, family, and colleagues. Reach out and network with SNRE alums and students the SNRE LinkedIn Group
      • How to build your professional profile on LinkedIn 
      • How to network professionally on LinkedIn
  • Complete the SNRE Career Interest Assessment Form
    • Upload the Career Interest Form on eRecruiterin the documents folder
      • Add New, Select "Other Documents" , Label as "Career Interest Form" , and Click Submit
    • Once you've completed and uploaded your Career Interest Form, schedule an appointment to get some important early career direction help with SNRE Career Services Staff (be sure to attach a copy of your "Career Interest Form" when you email staff to set up an appointment)

October

  • Start looking for an internship
    • Visit the SNRE Internship Website: view student internship reports, find out about internship funding, and more
    • Visit the SNRE Field of Study (FOS) Career pages to get ideas for internship hosts in your FOS
    • Identify key skills that you can incorporate into your internship experience to make yourself more marketable
  • Attend the SNRE Internship Workshop to learn about student internship opportunities and funding
  • Identify 3-5 employers in which you have interest
    • Set up informational interviews with contacts from these organizations to learn more about the organization and start networking/marketing yourself now!
    • Sample informational interview questions
  • Remember to re-post your new resume on the eRecruiter system if you have recently had it reviewed and revised
  • Sign up for a UM Alumni Mentor (alumni willing to provide advice to current students) or find a mentor on the SNRE LinkedIn group
  • Review resources available to SNRE students on the SNRE Career Services Website.
    • Did you know that you can print SNRE business cards, find important resume/CV, cover letter and interview tips, research salary information, and much more? Bookmark this page to keep all of these and more career resources at your fingertips!

November

  • The SNRE Resume Book deadline occurs in November. Be sure to have a default resume that is visible to employers on the eRecruiter system in order to be included in this resume book
  • 2nd year MLA Students - Attend the Job Shadowing Informational Session and submit your application
  • Did you know that each field of study at SNRE has a career specific website? Check out your Field of Study Career Page
  • Research different careers using the SNRE Career Path Resources (check out job titles, duties, requirements, and much more)
  • Review jobs/internships from your search agentresults
    • Go over these job postings and see what skills/qualifications are necessary for your dream job
    • Continue your internship search - specifically look for an internship that gives you the skills/qualifications that you will need to get hired for your dream job. SNRE Career Services Staff can suggest options for obtaining the skills necessary for you to succeed

December

  • If your summer internship will be unpaid or if you are planning to create your own internship opportunity, start working on your internship funding applications. Many applications are due in January
    • Get letters of support from your host internship organization and from faculty members
  • 2nd year MLA Students - update your portfolio for the upcoming MLA Portfolio Day (February) 
  • Get prepared for the SNRE Career Fair
    • Look over the list of participating employers and do research on these organizations
    • Be prepared to speak to the career fair employers about how your skills and experiences are a strong fit with their organization
    • Be sure to prepare questions to ask participating employers
  • Brush up on your interviewing skillsbefore the career fair
    • Email SNRE Career Services Staff with the job or internship description and we will customize a mock interview for you

1st year - 2nd Semester

January

  • Attend the SNRE Career Fair - follow up with any employers of interest
  • Submit internship funding applications
  • Review your eRecruiteraccount
    • Update your profile
    • Make certain that you have your most current resume uploaded on the system
    • Double check with SNRE Career Services Staff to make certain that your job search agent is set up properly
  • As you develop Master's project ideas and form teams, make sure to include opportunities for team members to gain universal job skills that will make each of you more marketable
  • Consider joining a Professional Organization that is related to your field of study. Each Field of Study Career Page has a listing of Professional Organizations that you can join. Add memberships to your resume/CV
  • Attend a conference - SNRE keeps a record of student conference reviews
    • Remember to ask your faculty advisor about conferences they would recommend attending
    • Volunteer at a conference - a great way to network & many times volunteers attend the conference for free!
    • Each Field of Study Career Page has a listing of conferences that may be of interest

February

  • Do you need to interview for your internship? SNRE Career Services Staffcan help with a mock interview
    • Email SNRE Career Services Staff with the internship description and we will customize a mock interview for you
  • You are planning to do a Master's Project. Remember to discuss with your group members when your summer internship starts and ends - work to avoid any conflicts with your Master's Project Research early on
  • Remember to be communicating with other students and alumni via the SNRE LinkedIn Group and the U-M Alumni Association  LinkedIn Group
  • If you don't have a summer internship, make an appointment to see SNRE's Internship Coordinator
  • 2nd year MLA students - participate in MLA Portfolio Day

March

  • Submit more internship funding applications
  • Begin planning for your internship
    • Do you have all the supplies necessary?
    • View the SNRE Internship Guidelines on the SNRE Internship Website
    • If your academic travel (conference, research, internship, project/thesis work) takes you out of the U.S., you are required to register via the U-M Travel Registry and purchase the U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance.  The health insurance is required even if you currently have insurance which provides for international travel.  Information and registration link is available here: http://globalportal.umich.edu/register-travel.php.

April

  • Update your eRecruiter profile before leaving for your internship/ Master's Project Work this summer. Example: have you changed your field of study, began a dual degree program, or are now seeking a job instead of an internship?
  • Are you still searching for a summer internship and need assistance? If so, please email snre.careers@umich.edu to set up an appointment

2nd Year - 3rd Semester

September

  • You are in the home stretch. Just 8 more months until graduation!
  • Start applying for jobs now - On average it takes SNRE Masters students 4 to 5 months to secure a job
  • Interested in exploring a leadership career with a Federal agency? Attend SNRE's Presidential Management Fellowship information session, sign up for the PMF listserv, and apply for this fellowship
  • If you did an internship, fill out the SNRE Internship Survey. This survey is used to create an internship report that will help other students decide where they might like to do an internship
  • Make sure that you have an eRecruiter Job Search Agent set up - this agent will email you jobs that are in your interest areas!
  • Talk with your faculty advisor and/or SNRE Career Services Staff about your career goals. They may know someone in the field that you can network with or possibly know someone who is looking to hire an SNRE student!

October

  • Revise your resume
    • Include summer research, volunteer activities, etc.
    • Post updated resume on eRecruiter
  • Develop a formal Job Search Plan - use our Top 10 Job Search Tips as a guide
  • Identify 3-5 employers in which you have interest
    • Set up informational interviews with contacts from these organizations to learn more about the organization and start networking/marketing yourself now!
    • Sample informational interview questions
  • Review resources available to SNRE students on the SNRE Career Services Website.
    • Did you know that you can print SNRE business cards, find important interview tips, research salary information, and much more?

November

  • Get prepared for the SNRE Career Fair

    • Be prepared to speak to the career fair employers about how your skills and experiences are a strong fit with their organization
    • Be sure to prepare questions to ask participating employers
  • 3rd year MLA Students - update your portfolio for the upcoming MLA Portfolio Day (February)

2nd Year - 4th Semester

January

  • Remember to use this career timeline and the Top 10 Job Search Tips to help stay on track
  • Attend the SNRE Career Fair - follow up with any employers of interest
  • Apply for positions- only 4 months left before you graduate!
    • Remember to customize your cover letters and resume for each position
    • Ask SNRE Career Services Staff to review your cover letters and resume
  • Are you still involved with a Professional Organizationthat is related to your professional interests?
    • Attend meetings/conferences, volunteer, and network with the organization members - let them know that you will be graduating soon and are looking for a job
    • Remember to ask your faculty advisor about conferences they would recommend attending
    • Present at a conference - a great way to improve your resume and many times presenters attend the conference for free!

February

  • Set up a Mock Interview with SNRE Career Services Staff to help you prepare for your upcoming interviews
  • Remember to be communicating with other students and alumni via the SNRE LinkedIn Group and the U-M Alumni Association  LinkedIn Group
  • 3rd year MLA students - participate in MLA Portfolio Day

March

  • Negotiate offers of employment

April

  • Congrats you are almost done with school!
  • Let SNRE Career Services Staff know about your new position (employer, title, location)
    • Update your eRecruiter account (Personal, Academic and Privacy Tabs)
    • Be a mentor to incoming students using the SNRE LinkedIn Group 
    • Disable your default resume if you no longer wish to be included in SNRE resume books
  • Have your UM email forwarded to your personal email account through the UM Alumni Association
  • Are you still searching for a job and need assistance? If so, please email snre.careers@umich.edu to set up an appointment

Post Graduation

SNRE Career Services Staff will be sending out the 6-month post graduation career survey in October. It's extremely important that you complete this survey in order for us to develop our annual job placement statistics. We hope to get 100% participation
