Ph.D. Geography, 1977, University of Michigan
M.A. Geography, 1976, Wayne State University
A.B. Mathematics (major), Zoology (official minor), History (unofficial minor), 1964, Vassar College
Adjunct Professor of Mathematical Geography and Population-Environment Dynamics. Most of my scholarly interests center on finding real-world applications for pure mathematics. Often, these theoretical projects have, as one component, a community service aspect: from the local to the international. In recent years, I have found Google 3D SketchUP and Google Earth to be exciting ways to confront theory with practice!
More specifically, my mathematical background involves graduate study in the Ph.D. program in Mathematics at the University of Chicago and also in the Ph.D. program in Mathematics at the University of Toronto (Advisor, H. S. M. Coxeter). Generally, my interests in that arena focus on synthetic geometry. My Ph.D. is in "Location Theory, or more broadly viewed, Theoretical Geography." Waldo R. Tobler was my advisor and he and John D. Nystuen were my dissertation co-chairs. I enjoy doing interdisciplinary scholarly research that draws these two disciplines together and I view publication, particularly forms that take advantage of current technology, to be an optimum way to share results among a disparate group of scholars around the world.
In terms of local community service, I have served the City of Ann Arbor in a variety of capacities, including over 8 years on the City of Ann Arbor Planning Commission (with service as its Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary). Also, I served for three years on the Environmental Commission and continue to work on a regular basis with Matthew Naud, Environmental Coordinator, City of Ann Arbor. I continue to sit on the city-wide Neighborhood Watch Advisory Panel of the City of Ann Arbor Police Department.
In the international arena, I am a principal at Community Systems Foundation (CSF) in Ann Arbor. CSF is a non-profit 501(c)3 NGO that is directly partnered with the United Nations. We develop management information systems that are currently in place in over 80 developing nations.
Finally, I also serve as President of Arlinghaus Enterprises L.L.C. It is a firm that specializes in the creative use of the internet on environmentally-friendly projects. Two of our continuing focal points involve use of the internet for interactive publications as well as for its use in perpetual memorialization.
Firsts:
- Fractal characterization of central place theory, 1985
- Electronic Journal creation, Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics, 1990-present.
- The Perimeter Project: 2008. Creative use of cemetery zoning to protect the fragile lands of the Earth. Employs green burial strategy coupled with trust-funded online memorialization. Pilot projects in place, 2003, 2008-present
- Created hundreds of 3D models of Ann Arbor (under handle "Archimedes") that appear as part of the default loadset of Google Earth 2006-present
- GooglEarthDay, 2009.
