Students With Disabilities
The School of Natural Resources and Environment faculty and staff want our students to receive a quality educational experience, and will work towards decreasing disability-related barriers in the pursuit of higher education. Below are steps to follow to achieve your academic goals.
Register with UM Services for Students with Disabilities.
Students registered with SSWD receive many benefits that can greatly enhance the academic experience. Here is a small sampling of the services SSWD provides to its students:
- Registered students are assigned a Coordinator of Services to help them arrange many helpful accommodations.
- For students who are registered with SSWD and qualify for note-taking assistance, SSWD provides photocopying of other student's notes, NCR (no carbon required) paper for taking notes, and Grade-A-Notes transcripts of lectures, when they are available. These services are free of charge, as are all services offered by SSWD.
- The SSWD office has a limited supply of small equipment, e.g., Franklin Spelling Aces, laptop computers, which students who are registered with the SSWD office can borrow on a short term basis.
Students with disabilities may require more financial aid assistance.
U-M Office of Financial Aid can adjust your financial aid package. Please make an inquiry prior to beginning of the term.
Register and create a plan of action before arriving for Orientation.
Remember to speak with your faculty at the beginning of each term - they need to know if you have special needs, especially around test-taking and note-taking issues. If you are registered through the SSWD, you will receive guidance on how to approach your faculty, other campus and local resources available to you, and academic online services. Special accommodations may include a revised financial aid package, transportation, special reading materials, and access to special computer terminals. Any student needing an accommodation that goes beyond individual courses to the program level should be taken to the Director of Academic Services. You may also contact the SNRE Director of Academic Services and the SNRE Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to discuss your situation.
