University of Michigan researchers are conducting a detailed study of the potential environmental and societal effects of hydraulic fracturing, the controversial natural gas drilling process known as fracking.
Go Blue Box, a student-initiated reusable takeout container program, began its pilot phase at the University Club restaurant in the Michigan Union Nov. 5. The program aims to help the university reach its waste-reduction goals by offering customers a reusable alternative to the disposable containers that are used only once before they are thrown away.
Award-winning author Thomas Hager, author of "Alchemy of Air," will be visiting SNRE Nov. 19 to talk about balancing the dangers of widespread pollution against the dangers of widespread famine. Join him to delve into a discussion about how we approach this problem in a way that provides enough food for the world, but limits damage from pollution.
SNRE Professor Andy Hoffman has been chosen as of the World’s 50 Best Business School Professors by Poets & Quants. Hoffman has a joint appointment with SNRE and the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He also serves as director of the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise. He came to the University of Michigan in September 2004. Sustainability is not just a future goal. Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is doing it, now. One of the world's foremost experiments in real-world ecological living, it’s 70-plus residents have reduced their ecological impact on key metrics by over 90 percent in areas such as transportation, energy and water use. Creative, cooperative economic models and an entrepreneurial base support the economic sustainability of the village. Education and research are integral to Dancing Rabbit’s goals. It actively shares its ideas and discoveries through visitor programs, publications and other media.
The Erb Speaker Series presents Jeff Seabright, Chief Environmental Officer at Coca-Cola. The title of his talk is "Connecting the Drops: The Evolution of Coca-Cola's Water Resource Strategy."

Shelie Miller, who won a National Science Foundation award for her development of a switchgrass research tool, says biofuels won’t solve our energy or climate problems—but they can help. “They are a source of domestic energy that can create jobs and stimulate rural economies,” says Miller, an assistant professor of natural resources and environment, School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), with a joint appointment in civil and environmental engineering, CoE. She teaches environmental systems analysis at the graduate level and ecological issues to undergrads.
The School of Natural Resources and Environment is seeking applicants for a full”time, nine”month faculty position in sustainable food systems. SNRE’s mission is to contribute to the protection of the Earth’s resources and the achievement of a sustainable society.
