The Leifur Eiriksson Foundation, a University of Virginia-related entity, commemorates the 1000th anniversary of the first Icelandic voyage to North America and support international collaborations between Icelandic and U.S. universities. Its scholarships provide support for a year of study for Icelandic graduate students studying in U.S. universities and for U.S. graduate students studying in Icelandic universities. The scholarships provide stipends of up to $25,000, a sum calculated to cover tuition and fees, living expenses, and support costs for a full academic year in Iceland.
Opportunities for U.S. students to study and conduct research in Iceland are extensive. Past research topics have included volcanology; predicting earthquakes; medieval reading practices; archeology; art; genetics; and freshwater food webs.
All Icelandic universities are eligible to receive Eiriksson scholars. The Foundation sets no restrictions regarding the disciplines to be studied except it may not support elementary or introductory study of either Icelandic or English as a language.
The Leifur Eiriksson Foundation expects to fund at least eight scholarships for 2014-2015.
