Fellowship opportunity for international PhD students--who are currently in either their 2nd or 3rd year in the PhD program. Eligible fields include life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science and psychology. A student does not need to be working with an HHMI Investigator to be eligible.

SNRE may forward up to 3 students to Rackham for consideration in the University-wide process. The University, as a whole, may then forward 10 nominations to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) for consideration.

SNRE's internal timeline:

Pre-nomination deadline: 16 Oct (send documents electronically to dianaw@umich.edu)

Materials needed:

  • STUDENT: one-page statement describing his/her research, future goals, and timetable for completion
  • STUDENT: current CV
  • FACULTY: letter (2 pages max) affirming that the nominee will do the dissertation in the advisor's laboratory and confirming the graduate program's intent to contribute 50% of the shortfall between the HHMI educational allowance and actual costs of tuition and benefits (the other 50% of the shortfall will be covered by Rackham).

HHMI’s fellowship program (up to 3 years) supports outstanding international Ph.D. students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies.

Students must be nominated by their program, and eligible graduate programs on the Ann Arbor campus may nominate up to three students.

The Rackham deadline for departments to enter and complete the Rackham on-line nomination process is 10/31/2013; Rackham anticipates making decisions by 11/18/2013 for the University of Michigan’s ten institutional nominations.

HHMI expects to fund up to 40 fellowships from several host institutions for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This fellowship program is open to international PhD students, enrolled full-time at UM, for years three, four, and five of a Ph.D. program (nominated in year two or three). Eligible fields include life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science and psychology. A student does not need to be working with an HHMI Investigator to be eligible.

Each fellow will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, plus an educational allowance for three years.

The nominating program is expected to contribute 50% of the shortfall between the educational allowance and actual costs of tuition and benefits.

Nominated students:
  • are studying in the life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science or psychology;
  • have demonstrated exceptional talent for research;
  • are in the second (or third) year of doctoral study;
  • have entered a laboratory in which they will conduct their dissertation research, and
  • are not U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents of the U.S.
