The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. NSF Fellows are expected to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals will be crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.

Award:

  • 3 years of support over 5-year graduate enrollment period
  • $32,000 annual cost of living stipend
  • $12,000 cost of education allowance [difference is made up by Rackham and SNRE]

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident
  • Undergraduat Senior or 1st year graduate student (includes 2nd year students who have completed less than 24 credits). If you are a PhD student who has already earned a master's degree, you are NOT eligible.
  • Field of study within NSF's mission
