“Information,” “communication,” or “education” are often presented as one, or sometimes even “the,” solution to societal challenges. This has also been the case within the context of climate change. Advocates of information-based interventions believe that if individuals only knew about problems (e.g., the underlying science) or could be made to care about these problems, they will take action to address them. Indeed, many environmental communication or education programs are based on this “information-deficit model” assumption. What are the limitations of this assumption? How should we be communicating climate change to encourage individuals to engage in mitigation or adaption behaviors and support relevant policies? The seminar will answer these and related questions based on the latest research findings and within the context of sample climate communication programs.
